Abstract

We report a figure-eight-type mode-locked erbium-doped fiber laser with a nonlinear- optical-loop mirror (NOLM)1 as saturable absorber, which is different from previous reports on a similar type of laser with a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror (NALM).2 Although theoretical calculation supports the possibility of a figure-eight laser with a NOLM,3 in this paper we report the first experimental evidence, to our knowledge, on this kind of laser. The NALM has a lower switching threshold, making it easier to pump, but it is not stable because pulses can oscillate at different harmonic rates of the cavity round trip.
