Experimental determination of quantum phase distributions by using optical homodyne tomography

Abstract

Using the new technique of optical homodyne tomography, we have measured the Wigner function and density matrix of an electromagnetic field mode. These quantities can be used to determine the distribution of any theoretically defined optical phase, as long as the phase reference is that of a strong coherent-state field.
