Abstract

Quantum amplifiers, quantum-nondemolition (QND) detectors, and quantum-state duplicators are of great fundamental interest, Cloning, in the sense of state duplication, is forbidden for general states, but observable duplication is permitted.1 Furthermore, phase-sensitive amplifiers can amplify one quadrature noiselessly, imposing the inevitable amplifier noise on the conjugate quadrature.11 A related topic is QND measurement, in which a signal is measured without being disturbed, again by imposing the measurement noise on the conjugate observable.3
