Dynamics of carrier-induced screening of the piezo-electric effect in CdSe/CdS superlattices

Abstract

Piezo-electric fields in strained-layer superlattices (SLs) evoke strong modifications of the bandstructure. These effects are especially pronounced in polar materials with a hexagonal lattice structure such as Wurtzite-type CdSe and CdS. The separation of optically generated electrons and holes into adjacent layers of type-II SLs screens the piezo-electric fields. [1] The resulting large optical nonlinearites are most promising for the application in optical modulators.
