Abstract

The spontancous-emission coefficient β is defined as the fraction of the total spontaneous emission from a laser’s gain medium that is emitted into the lasing mode. This quantity is important in determining the threshold pumping; level as well as other laser properties; a larger β corresponds to a more nearly ideal laser.
