Generation of tunable short-pulse VUV-radiation by four-wave-mixing processes with femtosecond excimer-laser pulses

Abstract

For the generation of tunable nanosecond pulses in VUV, parametric four-wave-mixing processes have been thoroughly investigated. Typically, two-photon resonant mixing schemes are used to enhance the nonlinear susceptibilities. Comparable resonant schemes, however, cannot be considered for the generation of picosecond, or even femtosecond, pulses because the pulse duration will be increased by the resonances and strong population-transfer processes will occur in the excitation with intense short-pulse radiation.
