Abstract

The translational motion of a particle in a fluid is a problem that has continued to receive substantial theoretical attention during the past 25 years.1,2 Recently, it has been realized that particle motions can be probed on length scales <5 Å, using newly developed multiple-light-scattering spectroscopies.3 This thousand-fold increase in resolution offers the possibility of studying translational motion in a new physical regime where the hydrodynamic degrees of freedom of the surrounding fluid play an important role.
