Abstract

Recent investigations show that stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) in single-mode fibers is characterized not only by nonlinearity, but also by fiber-dispersive properties such as the value of phase mismatch Δℜ = 2ℜp - ℜs -ℜa where ℜp,s,a are propagation constants of the pump, Stokes, and anti-Stokes waves.1,2 To analyze how the features of SRS are affected by interplay between the nonlinear and dispersive effects in a birefringent fiber, we investigate the process of SRS in birefringent fibers by linear stability analysis of the cw pump radiation. We discuss the two basic geometries of interaction, i.e., two orthogonally polarized pump waves in the principal fiber polarization axes and pump wave in one of the axes. For both cases, we present the dispersion relations that describe the competition between Raman amplification and the effect of modulational instability.
