Abstract
A fiber laser is a laser in which the active medium is contained in the core of an optical fiber. I have constructed a single-longitudinal-mode erbium-doped fiber laser and determined that the short-term frequency fluctuations of the laser are less than 1 MHz rms.1 A spectral analysis of this noise from 0 to 25 KHz showed no structure beyond 600 Hz. These aspects make fiber lasers particularly well suited for high-resolution spectroscopy. The standing-wave coupled-cavity Er+3 fiber laser is discussed in more detail in Ref. 1. It can be continuously tuned over 2 GHz, and the coarse tuning range is 1.52-1.58 µm.
