Abstract

Recently, we have shown that the second-harmonic generation (SHG) efficiency of a clean metal surface is strongly altered by the presence of ordered steps/This sensitivity occurs because the steps break inversion symmetry in a direction lateral to the surface, thereby giving additional contributions to the second-order susceptibility tensor, SHG therefore can be used as a tool to monitor the static and dynamic properties of steps that are important for determining many physical and chemical properties of surfaces.
