Laser remote sensing of phytoplankton photosynthetic activity in situ: new technique and applications

Abstract

The method described is a remote modification of the lamp pump-probe technique1 that is used for laboratory estimation of algae photosynthetic activity in water samples. Remote measurements are made by using laser pulses for excitation of chlorophyll a fluorescence in subsurface water layers. This fluorescence is consecutively excited by single probing pulses and by probing pulses following the pumping pulses.
