Abstract

We describe a straightforward experimental technique that is potentially a powerful tool for laser diagnostics. Light from a single-mode laser is frequency shifted by acousto-optic modulators, then reintroduced to the laser cavity and studied by light-beating (heterodyne) methods. The laser amplifies the return signal. Studies of the gain and bandwidth of this above-threshold amplifier reveal several novel features that can be related to the below-threshold amplifier1,2
