Abstract
For an electron traveling above a flat metal surface there are a number of bound states Owing to the potential caused by interaction of the electron with its image charge in the metal, for spherical metal particles, these states should also exist even as the sphere approaches 1 nm in size. We believe we have found an example in the near-threshold photodetachment spectrum of the negative ion of a six-atom duster of gold.
