Abstract

A surge of interest in the study of a two-dimensional (2-D) electron gas in quantizing magnetic fields by optical methods has been motivated by attempts to develop spectroscopic probes of the quantum Hall effect (QHE).1-4 We have recently reported results in (In, Ga)As quantum wells3 in which the connection to the integer QHE was realized for a particular sample design in terms of its optical properties. This design calls for a one-sided modulation-doped quantum well in Which the Fermi level (EF) lies near a particular unoccupied conduction subband (typically n = 2).
