Quantum optics from the point of view of accelerator physics

Abstract

We discuss the possibility of exploiting concepts and techniques developed within the framework of accelerator physics to understand problems in quantum optics, such as those related to Glauber coherent states and squeezed-state production. We show that a close parallel exists between beam emittance and Planck's constant and between the beam optical Twiss parameters and squeezing functions. One of the most interesting results is the possibility of a geometrical visualization of squeezed-state evolution and the possibility of understanding the rich phenomenology underlying these problems in a rather simple way. The emerging result of such an analysis is that squeezing can also be understood by using classical concepts. Finally we discuss a class of invariants, also discussed within the framework of accelerator physics, that can be usefully exploited within the context of quantum optics.
