Above-threshold ionization in HI and multiphoton ionization of I2 and CF3I

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

Although a number of elegant experiments over the past several years have explored the photoionization of atoms (Xe, in particular) at high optical-field intensities, considerably less has been reported for small molecules. Toward that end, we have studied the photoionization of HI, I2, and CF3I at 532 and 266 nm at focal intensities exceeding 1012 W/cm2. These experiments used a “magnetic bottle” time-of-flight electron- energy spectrometer with an energy resolution of <15 meV For calibration purposes, initial experiments were conducted with atomic Xe, and above-threshold ionization (ATI) was readily observed. Subsequently, HI vapor (~5 × 10−7 torr) was photoionized with the frequency-doubled beam from an injection-seeded Nd:YAG laser (~7-ns FWHM pulses).
