Frequency-stabilized external-cavity diode lasers

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

Diode lasers are attractive sources for atomic spectroscopy because of their low cost, ease of operation, and reliability. However, their spectral characteristics are often inadequate for spectroscopic applications—some devices operate on multiple longitudinal modes, and most singlemode lasers have linewidths of tens to hundreds of megahertz, which are too large for many applications. One way of improving the spectral purity of these devices is to use strong feedback from a frequency-selective external cavity. In conjunction with antireflection coating of the output facet of the diode, this is sufficient to force single-mode, narrowband operation.
