Abstract

The interaction of subpicosecond light with dense matter has been shown to be a source of intense extreme-ultraviolet and kilovolt radiation.1-3 Using a high-intensity subpicosecond laser based on amplification in XeCl4 we are studying the interaction of ultraviolet subpicosecond pulses at intensities of 5 × 1018 W/cm2 with high-density plasmas from solid targets. A schematic diagram of the target geometry with the associated diagnostics is shown in Fig. 1. The focusing optic is an f/1.9 off-axis parabola.
