Femtosecond dynamics of laser melting and disordering of GaAs surfaces

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

Fast laser-induced phase transitions in semiconductors and metals are of great current interest. Optical methods based upon nonlinear reflection from the surfaces were proved to be very effective in studying laser-matter interactions due to their structural sensitivity and unique temporal resolution. We report on the study of the dynamics of linear reflection and second harmonic generation from the GaAs surface, irradiated with 100-fs 100-µJ pulses at fluencies well above the amorphization threshold.
