Abstract

Multiphoton processes are important in the interaction of high-peak-power lasers with gases and vapors. These processes lead to excitation and ionization. In this way, relatively cold plasmas with high electron densities may be produced. These plasmas represent ideal conditions for recombination-type lasers; they correspond to conditions found in the end phase of expanding plasmas generated by focusing a high-power laser onto a solid target.
