Optical saturation of intersubband transitions

Abstract

Intersubband transitions in AlGaAs quantum wells were first observed by West and Eglash1,2 and proposed as a promising route to integrated optical computers.3 The saturation powers and relaxation rates in certain types of quantum wells were measured by Seilmeier et al.4 by using 2-ps infrared laser pulses. We observe saturation instead with a continuous CO2 laser chopped with an acousto-optic modulator into 10-μs square-wave pulses with a variable duty cycle for thermal heating studies.
