Abstract

Since first proposed In 1972 by Kogelnik and Shank the distributed feedback (DFB) laser has found uses in optical communication, spectroscopy and other applications requiring single-longitudinal-mode output. To decrease the threshold gain or increase the threshold mode discrimination of DFB lasers the use of external reflectors and cavities has been proposed. In general, however, the threshold modes of these hybrid DFB lasers are extremely sensitive to the position of the reflector relative to the DFB grating.
