Abstract

We show how subwavelength-diameter silica-fibers, “optical nanofibers”, can open new perspectives for manipulating atoms and photons. We explore the atom/photon interaction around a nanofiber both theoretically and experimentally. Modification of spontaneous emission, single-atom trapping without external field, collective atomic emission, and quantum interferences are experimentally demonstrated by combining the nanofibers and laser-cooled Cs-atoms.
