Abstract
Photonic integrated circuits are necessary components for many applications ranging from communications to sensors. Photonic bandgap structures, consist of periodic variation in refractive index, and provide compact photonic integrated circuits by confining light to sub-micrometer dimensions. By creating defects in the periodic structure, photonic functional devices can be realizeD.Combining these with MEMS structures sensors can be realizeD.In this presentation, devices for optical communication such as mux/demux and filters, and devices for sensors such as force sensors are demonstrated by modeling and simulation. Fabrication studies using silicon on insulator technology will also be presented.
