Abstract

It is important to monitor temperature and corrosion in Aluminum Conductor Steel Reinforced (ACSR) overhead power cables. A stainless steel encased optical fiber sensor is incorporated in ACSR cable in place of steel core. Accelerated corrosion is simulated in the ACSR cable and the current induced temperature is monitored. The results demonstrate that Raman Distributed Temperature Sensor (RDTS) is a promising technique for both temperature and corrosion monitoring in ACSR cable.
