Abstract

Upconversion of sub-bandgap photons has been suggested to increase the efficiencies of silicon solar cells. Here we use model calculations to study the potential of optical near-field effects in gold nanoparticles to enhance the upconversion intensities from erbium ions. The results indicate that upconversion can be enhanced in a geometry relevant for applications.
