Abstract

We evaluate the temporal switching characteristics of an all-optical switch based upon a forward-pumped symmetric Mach-Zehnder interferometer using SOAs. We demonstrate a 1.5 ps switching window using 350 fs control and data pulses at 1.55 µm. The control pulse energy required at the input of the switch is only 200 fJ. This device can be used as an all-optical demultiplexer for lightwave networks or as an ultrafast optical sampling gate.
