Abstract

The overwhelming IP-based traffic increase leads to the reconstruction of the unified integrated network based on ATM. The WDM backbone network is discussed to be built in full-mesh configuration using WDM XC systems. However. this does not mean the uniform information flow in it, so that hierarchical structures in nodes, traffic, and links may provide more sophisticated network operation and management, in cost-effective manner. In this paper, we propose architecture of hierarchical optical cross-connect nodes, the hierarchical restoration operation in the hierarchical optical path. Secondary, we discuss on optical performance monitoring subsystems in the physical layer by introducing a new QBM method with the Manchester-coded optical packet.
