A wavelength-self-tunable single-sideband (WST-SSB) filter is obtained using an InP:Fe photorefractive crystal. The device's 1.55 μm double-sideband (DSB) input signal generates, via the photorefractive effect, the Bragg gratings which enable its own diffraction into a SSB signal. Such a smart filter is useful in order to compensate for deleterious chromatic dispersion effects in fiber-wireless access networks. Therefore, system experiments implementing a WST-SSB filter operating at 16 GHz are carried out, leading to compensation for fiber chromatic dispersion penalties and successful fiber-radio data transmission.
