Abstract

High optical efficiency and optimal luminous intensity distribution are two of the most important issues for aeronautical ground light. A high-efficient light-emitting diode (LED) based freeform lens design method is proposed in this letter in brief. According to this method, the luminous intensity distribution is optimized to form a normal distribution. Based on LED chip array packaging (LCAP), a runway center line light (rapid exit taxiway indicator light) of airport is designed by using this method. Monte-Carlo rays tracing result demonstrates that optical properties of lamp can fully comply with the ICAO regulation with high efficiency of 85% in theory. Tolerance analyses about manufacturing and installation error are conducted and acceptable ranges of errors are also presented.
