Phononics learn from photonics: thermal phonon engineering by phononic crystal

Abstract

Heat conduction control using ballisticity and wave nature of phonons brought new possibility to thermal management in solid. Analogy between photonics and phononics will be discussed. We introduce characteristic heat transfer in Si membrane with phononic patterning such as structure-dependent thermal conduction, heat focusing, and counter intuitive physics of heat transfer based on wave nature of phonons.
