Abstract

Space division multiplexing based on multi-core fibers and multi-mode fibers is a promising approach to overcome the nonlinear Shannon limit of single-core and single-mode fibers. This paper reviews the recent progress of optical space division multiplexing, such as ultra-high capacity over 1 Peta bit/s and high capacity long-haul transmission with capacity-distance produce over 1 Exa bit/s-km.
