FIBRE TRANSMISSION SYSTEM RESEARCH IN THE UNITED KINGDOM

Abstract

In the United Kingdom work on fibre optic communication systems research started in about 1964 with some propagation measurements carried out on low order mode fibres by Lomax who was working at STL with Kao and Hockham. This led to the publication of a paper1 in 1966 and discussions with potential users, notably the British Post Office and the UK Ministry of Defence. In addition to the Company funded work at STL2, much of the credit for a viable UK fibre optic transmission activity must go to F.F. Roberts of the Post Office Research Department at Dollis Hill and D. Williams of the MoD Signals Research and Development Establishment at Christchurch. As well as initiating their own research effort, they stimulated and sponsored industrial work on the basic technologies carried out on behalf of the British Post Office and the Ministry of Defence. More recently fibre optic system research for airborne applications has been carried out by the Royal Aircraft Establishment at Farnborough and for Naval applications by the Admiralty Surface Weapons Establishment at Portsmouth.
