Abstract

The resistance to the damage of metallic diffraction gratings subject to intense laser pulses is reported. The onset of surface damage on the gratings for long (300 psec) laser pulses along with short (40 fsec) laser pulses is examined by looking into the change in diffraction efficiency with increasing laser energy. We find that the choice of substrate material also plays a crucial role in determining the damage resistance of the gratings.
