Abstract

This work numerically investigates the possibility to deposit an uniform and azimuthally symmetric high refractive index (HRI) coating along thinned fiber Bragg gratings. The reported results demonstrate the advantages obtainable with this new configuration as regards sensing applications. By proper choosing the overlay features in terms of thickness and refractive index, it is possible to strongly improve the device sensitivity versus the coating features and the surrounding refractive index (SRI). The attention is mainly focused on the analysis of the effects of nano-scale HRI coatings on the modes distribution and the influence on the SRI sensitivity.
