Abstract
Traditional soil pressure sensors are mostly based on vibration wire or electrical strain gauge, whose stability and durability can not meet the need of long-term Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) for soil structures. In this paper, a new kind of FBG-based soil-pressure sensor with temperature-sensing and compensation are brought forward, designed and fabricated, and its feasibility and advantages are set forth. Firstly, a new and simple structure of the soil pressure sensors is given. Secondly, the sensing principle of the pressure sensor is deduced. And finally the sensing properties of this kind of new sensor under dead load are tested. The results from experiments and theoretical calculation show that this kind of sensor is proper to be used in practical soil-pressure monitoring, even long-term SHM for civil infrastructures.
