Abstract
A novel fibre optic heterodyne vibrometer is demonstrated in which the heterodyne processing is moved to the receiving section of the interferometer. This significantly reduces the optomechanical stability requirements and in addition allows optimisation of the reference to signal beam ratio. The instrument is based on the use of birefringent optical fibre components and can be configured to have minimum down lead sensitivity.
