Abstract

Polarization maintaining (PM) optical fibers are showing promise in a new generation of gyroscope applications and other fiber optic sensing systems. One of the key obstacles to making in-roads in these applications remains the longterm cost of the PM fiber. This paper describes the properties of an elliptical core fiber expected to meet the long term cost requirements for these applications.
