Abstract
Interferometric fibre optic sensors, whilst capable of high resolution, have in general been accompanied by a limited unambiguous operating range. They also have had limited applicability for measurement of temperature strain and displacement, due to the problem of initialising the system, i.e. should the interferometer be switched off, all information about the measured phase will be lost and new initial conditions must be determined when the system is turned on again [1], These problems are avoided in so called white light interferometry where a broad band source and a nearly balanced interferometer is used [2].
