Abstract

With each passing year, applications for fiber optic sensors expand into new areas. One potential application for new fiber optic sensor systems is for the detection of Radio Frequency Electric Fields (RF/EF). If an RF/EF sensor could be made totally from dielectric materials, it could be used as an antenna for receiving RF transmissions without disturbing or distorting the field lines since there are no metallic components to reflect or transmit RF energy. This type of sensor has the potential of wide bandwidth and high sensitivity.
