Abstract

The use of electrical sensors to monitor the status of explosive and combustible crude oil poses serious hazards. In recent years passive optical sensors with optical signal, transmitted to a remote monitoring station through a fiber, have proven to be available and safe alternative [1][2]. This article describes an optical fiber sensor system measuring the existing level of oil storage in a tank, 20m high, 15m in radius. The active module, including the electronic components and electro -optic devices, is located in a remote station 150m away from the measured tank.
