Abstract

A novel optical differential pressure sensor based on the variation in the curvature of an optical waveguide is described. A transparent diaphragm, or an optical fibre fixed to a diaphragm, is used to convert differential pressure to waveguide curvature. The pressure is measured through the variation in the intensity transmitted by the waveguide, which has part of its lateral walls roughened and blackened. Experimental results are presented and compared to a theoretical model.
