Abstract

Besides telecommunications a major application of optical glass fibers is in sensor technology.1 Sensor technology offers a number of advantages, such as increased sensitivity, geometric versatility, and its diverse applications in the areas of magnetic, electric, acoustic, pressure, thermal, torque, etc. sensors. The phase shift or interferometric sensors, whether for magnetic or acoustic sensing, offer sensitivities which are orders of magnitude higher than existing ones.
