Abstract

We discuss possible techniques for realizing higher capacity transoceanic transmission systems and outline the important role of wide bandwidth amplification using C+L EDFAs, nonlinear transmission optimization, space division multiplexing, advanced modulation formats, and variable spectral efficiency.
