Shake Before Break: Per-Span Fiber Sensing with In-Line Polarization Monitoring

Abstract

Fast state-of-polarization transients induced by transmission-fiber disturbances can indicate an imminent fiber break even in the absence of transmission errors. We present a simple inline polarization monitoring scheme that detects fiber disturbances, enabling proactive protection.
