The Future of Transport Networks

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

Optics and electronics provide largely complementary capabilities for fundamental physical reasons: optics is good for communicating information over long distances and for limited forms of switching; electronics is good for processing and storing information and therefore for sophisticated forms of switching, including packet switching and routing.
