Short Efficient Non-Adiabatic Spot-Size Converters by Mode Interference in Silicon-on-Insulator Waveguides

Abstract

4 μm long spot-size converters for coupling to single-mode silicon-on-insulator wire waveguides with losses of ~0.8 dB are demonstrated. The efficiency is maximized by mode interference and exceeds that of linear tapers with equivalent lengths.
