Abstract

DATA OVER CABLE SERVICE INTERFACE SPECIFICATION (DOCSIS) PON, or D-PON/DPON, is a type of passive optical networking that implements the DOCSIS service layer interface on Ethernet PON (EPON) standards. In short DPON makes a EPON OLT look and act like a DOCSIS Cable Modem Termination System (CMTS). The objective use of this technology is to allow cable operators to use their DOCSIS based OSS to provision and scale Ethernet based business service at the scale and pace of deployment that residential scale broadband adoption once required. Such is the potential growth opportunity for Ethernet based Fiber to the Premises (FTTP) based business services.
