Compensating Multimode Fiber Dispersion Using Adaptive Optics

Abstract

In multimode fiber (MMF), principal modes are free of modal dispersion to first order. Using adaptive optics for controlled excitation of principal modes enables transmission far beyond the traditional bandwidth ⨉ length product. This technique scales much better than electrical equalization to multiple WDM channels, high bit rates and long fibers. We have demonstrated 10 Gbit/s NRZ transmission through 11 km of standard 50 pm graded-index MMF.
