A simple and highly-sensitive (−67 dBm) fault monitoring and localization scheme is achieved without modifications to the ONU, by utilizing a low bandwidth (∼2 kHz) and low power (∼−7 dBm) fault monitor and the high reflectivity mirror of VCSEL transmitters.
